History

Eight weeks after the defeat of Alexander Luthor and Superboy-Prime, sightings of a mysterious hero were first reported by several eyewitnesses in Metropolis. He was seen saving an elderly woman and others from a falling monorail by seemingly teleporting them to safety. A day later, he was seen saving group of firemen in a burning building by somehow making the falling rafters vanish. A day later, a police officer held two pieces of a gunman's rifle after Supernova sheared it in half with his powers. Finally, a woman said he saved her daughter from a rip current.

One week and four days later, the the Daily Star had the first exclusive of the new superhero and dubbed him Supernova. That same day, Supernova saved Clark Kent, who jumped out of one of the Daily Planet's windows to get an interview. However, when Supernova noticed Bahdnesian terrorists in the US Army's newly stolen all-terrain vehicle, he quickly set Kent down to apprehend the criminals. Using his energy projection powers, Supernova moved a chuck of pavement instantly, leading the criminals to exit the vehicle and surrender. Supernova then secured the crime scene and protected a young boy from falling into the hole. All the while, Kent watched amongst a crowd of witnesses, taking pictures and getting brief statements from Supernova.

Booster Gold was incredibly jealous of Supernova, as the new hero had become Metropolis's new beloved champion instead of himself. This jealousy came to blows after Supernova had accomplished what Booster had failed to do in defeating a ballostro that had carried a nuclear submarine into the middle of the city. In a grand attempt to prove his worth, Booster carried the submarine, which was about to explode, out of harm's way. Booster began to fall from the sky after the blast, and Supernova caught him, only to find that he had been incinerated in the explosion.

While battling Skeets, Supernova revealed himself as... Booster Gold. He faked his death with the assistance of Rip Hunter.

Identity

Before Supernova's identity was revealed, several people expressed their belief that he is a familiar hero in a new costume.

Wonder Girl thought that Supernova was a resurrected Superboy, only to have her hopes dashed when he appeared not to know her.
Lex Luthor believed that Supernova was none other than Superman, who adopted the identity for no reason other than to toy with him.
